Jotham Wei

Chairman of the Board of GR Lifestyle (Stock Code: 00108.HK). Senior Engineer, author of Art City, and Partner of LAN Gallery. Graduated in Architecture, he has devoted over 40 years to urban planning and development, advocating the “Space + Content” approach and exploring sustainable relationships between cities and people. Widely known in the industry as an “academic in real estate” and a “pioneer in distressed asset revitalization,” he deeply participated in Beijing’s urban planning and witnessed the development of numerous national and municipal landmark projects, including the Old City preservation program, the CBD, Financial Street, and Beijing Capital International Airport.

Mr. Wei upholds an urban development philosophy rooted in long-term vision, professional rigor, aesthetic thinking, and artistic sensibility. He emphasizes the cultural value and historical imprint of architecture, believing that “architecture is history made solid, and art made permanent,” and has always sought to elevate a city’s aesthetic standards while driving economic growth.

In an era of rapid urbanization and growing homogeneity, I choose to balance commercial logic with inner conviction, shaping architecture through substantial “content” rather than mere appearance or short-term financial returns. Buildings exist to serve people, and people have souls; therefore, I oppose uniform replication. Truly good projects integrate high-quality content, invite people to stay, and make them feel comfortable. Behind this lies an understanding of life, insight into the times, and, above all, sincere care for people.

I have always believed that products should speak for themselves. Architecture is not about rhetorical flourish or conceptual hype, but about being genuinely experienced and used. We therefore devote ourselves to refining every project, focusing on user experience and thinking one step ahead of our clients. Standards are defined through real use; value is created through time spent and experience gained. What GR upholds is to let space carry meaning and let our works respond to their era, enabling architecture to truly bring positive change to cities and everyday life. This is our inner driving force, and the fundamental reason I continue to move forward.

I am neither a scholar nor a theorist, but simply a worker of the city. I live, study, and work in cities, with my journey and friendships spanning across the world. My passion for art has driven me to further explore cities and create value, allowing art and urban life to intersect with me, and enabling me to deeply feel the pulse and future of cities.

Cities and civilizations grow together as humanity’s greatest creation—fragile yet enduring, ever-changing, destroyed and reborn time and again. They embody unique charm, profound history, and boundless imagination. Every city has the potential to become an Art City, continuously dialoguing with its people, recording history, and guiding us toward progress.

Art is the soul of a city. An Art City is alive, granting humanity the power to continue civilization. LAN Gallery has always upheld a public-interest mission, continuously focusing on diverse ex pressions of contemporary art and supporting the growth of emerging Chinese artists. Through close collaboration with artists and academic institutions, we conduct exhibitions, research, and dialogues, and build a cross-regional creative platform connecting cities such as Chengdu, Sanya, London, and Los Angeles. By regularly organizing exhibitions and public programs on themes including avant-garde art, women, environmental protection, and intangible cultural heritage, we promote international exposure and local exchange for young artists, foster a healthy art market ecosystem, and strengthen the connection between art and the public—allowing contemporary art to take root in cities and radiate humanistic warmth and social vitality.
